One of a series of curves representing the sound pressure level across the frequency spectrum for background noise that should not be exceeded in various environments. Higher noise levels are permitted at the lower frequencies since the human ear is less sensitive to sounds in this frequency region. Also called NC curves. (Ching, 1995)
