According to tradition there are Nine Choirs of Angels or Nine Orders of Angels, mediating between God and Man, nine squaring the Trinity. This is reflected in the design of certain retro-choirs (e.g., Fountains Abbey, Yorkshire (c. 1205-47), and Durham Cathedral (1242-1280s). (Curl & Wilson, 2016)
