In middle-age architecture the heads of the nails were frequently made ornamental and varied to some extent during the prevalence of the different styles. They were used not only in fastening the metalwork to the door, but the door was often studded with them. They are sometimes very elaborate, being made of three or four pieces. (Parker, 1896)
