Plank flooring gradually evolved into long, narrow strip flooring. Generally, strip flooring is tongued and grooved along its sides and frequently along its ends as well. Hardwood strip flooring is often found in more public living spaces; whereas softwood strip flooring is found in attics, closets, kitchens and the like, or is used as a base for resilient flooring (such as linoleum) or carpeting.
