Leaders of charitable organizations and civic causes would borrow art and antiquities from their friends and produce a spectacular exhibition. These loan shows became common during the 18809s and through them the paying public saw much art that was otherwise kept behind closed doors. One such show in 1885, the Pedestal Fund Loan Exhibition, raised money to build the base of Bartholdi’s Statue of Liberty. (Zukowski, 2006)
