The vertical passage or channel through which a hoist of any kind ascends. Thus, in buildings, it is commonly provided that the hoistway, or the clear space carried through the floors from top to bottom, shall be enclosed with solid partition or with gratings to prevent accidents. (Sturgis, 1900)
