A surface deposit on marble and limestone formed by the reaction of calcite in the stone with airborne sulfur dioxide (SO2); typically more friable than the stone substrate; usually contains dark soot particles that turn the stone black in sheltered areas not washined by rainwater. (Bucher, 1996)
