Painting with a coat of paint without gloss, presenting a dead surface when dry; usually mixed with turpentine with little or no linseed oil. Also, dabbing a still wet coat of paint with a stiff brush to conceal the usual brush marks, and to produce an even-appearing surface. (Sturgis, 1900)
