Any stone thought to be peculiarly fit to resist great heat. Such a material occasionally used in England is described as having a large quantity of silica, and is apparently a sandstone capable of resisting even the direct effects of flame under ordinary circumstances, as in connection with an open fireplace. In the U.S., some varieties of Western sandstone, generally of light brown color, are found unusually resistant. (Sturgis, 1900)
