In French, a turret, watch tower, or other place, provided for guards or watchmen; usually, in Medieval fortifications, corbelled out from a curtain wall or from a salient angle, and dominating the battlements, either open or with a roof. Hence, in modern usage, an angle turret springing from a corbel or cul de lampe, as in many late Gothic and early Renaissance houses in France and Germany. (Kremer, 2023)
