A small softwood tree with aromatic, reddish brown to purpplish brown heartwood and whitish sapwood of medium strength and low stiffness; found in eastern North America; used for posts, framing, trim, and to line storage closets; lumbered locally in small quantities; Juniperus virginiana. Also known in southern U.S. as juniper, Virginian juniper. See also cedar, western red cedar. (Bucher, 1996)
