Regularly spaces ‘teeth-like’ projections from the top of a wall. The projecting flaps are called ‘merlons’ and the gaps between are ‘crenels’. Derived from defensive structures like castles or city walls, they were later used for decorative purposes. (Hopkins, 2014)
