communities of opportunity

The root of the word “community” goes back to the Latin word communitus; cum means “withor “together,” and munus means gift. The word “opportunity” comes from the Latin word opportunus; the Latin root ob means “in the direction of,” and portus means port or harbor; opportunus describes the winds that took travelers to their destination, a safe harbor… So, taken together, the Latin roots of the phrase “community of opportunity” refer to the gift of being together, and returning home from our ventures to a safe harbor (Rose, 2016).
