In French, a barrack for troops – a building for the lodging of soldiers. The Frenchterm, rare in English; it is used, however, for those buildings of great architectural pretensions which are not uncommon in the cities of the continent. Of these one of the most noted is thatfacing the Champs de Mars, in Paris, which was built in the reign of Louis XV as a military school, and several others of the 18th century.
