Strong cotton cloth, resembling linen in texture. Its name originates from one of its principal sources: ‘Calicut’ (Calcutta), in what was at one time Portugese India but which later passed into the ownership of the East India Company. Imported from India until the 1770s. (Parissien, 1994)
