Originally a high sloping deskstanding in the middle of the choir, often accompanied by a pair of tall candlesticks, and used as a rest for the servicebook, from whence the hebdomadrius reads or sings certain portions of the canonical hours, the antiphons, and lessons. (Sturgis, 1900)
