Any of the allowable unit stresses for bending, compression perpendicular and parallel to grain, tension parallel to grain, horizontal shear, and corresponding modulus of elasticity, established by a grading agency for various species and grades of structural lumber. Base values must be adjusted first for size and then for conditions of use. (Ching, 1995)
