The coat of plastering, either the first or second coat in Italian practice, ancient and modern, as preparation for painting in fresco, but not the finishing coat or intonaco. Modern practice seems to be about five parts of sand to one of lime, and the coat of plastering, when applied directly to the brick, about half an inch thick. (Sturgis, 1900)
