Horizontal pieces of timber in a wall used to support rafters, ceiling joists, and other structural members. The sole plate is the bottom horizontal member of a frame wall; a top plate (or wall plate) is the horizontal member of a frame wall to which rafters or upper floor joists are fastened; the sill plate is a horizontal member anchored to a masonry wall. (Phillips, 1994)
