A receptacle or mere depression provided for the accumulation of unwanted water, which is usually removed therefrom by a sump pump. 2. A depression or hole in a pier foundation, used to collect drainage water so that it may be pumped out; also a hole under a building or in a tunnel for the same purpose. (Kremer, 2022)
