A rubbed finish on sandstone and limestone is accomplished by hand or machine rubbing the surface of a stone until it is perfectly smooth. A polished finish, usually reserved for hard limestone, granite, and marble, involves machine or hand rubbing until a lustrous surface is obtained. (Phillips, 1994)
