Born in Lima, Viceroyalty of Peru, in 1579, he was the illegitimate child of a Spanish gentleman and an African slave. At age 11, he became a servant of the Dominican Friars in Lima. Because of Martin’s virtue, the prohibition against admitting people of color was repealed and Martin became a Dominican. He showed special care for the sick friars. He died in 1639 and was canonized in 1962. (Kremer, 2026)
