A thin, curved, structural outer layer that distributes loads equally in all directions; most commonly used for roofs composed of concrete, may also be wood; first used for a concrete dome constructed in Germany by Bauersfeld and Dischinger in 1922. Also known as thin shell concrete. See also reinforced concrete. (Bucher, 1996)
