Visit to Sebastian, Florida (2024)

In early 2024 we had an opportunity to visit Sebastian, Florida. Located on an inlet, the experience of this place is inextricably tied to the water. In the early 20th century President Theodore Roosevelt designated one of the first bird sanctuaries in the U.S.

A local restaurant we stopped at had a view of the inlet.

This drainage channel neatly divided the land and helped to prepare this area for the heavy rain and storm events that the cost is prone to get.

Just a short drive from town is the ocean.

The barrier dunes facing the ocean are fairly built up with plant life.

Viewing from the other side looking out towards water, one gets the sense of how plants help to keep the sand intact instead of washing off.

One of the biggest changes for the region is mass transit. The Bright Line goes between Orlando and Miami. While local residents decry the noisy commotion, this helps to prepare Florida for a future in which gas prices and cheap airplane flights make it costly for most people to traverse long distances between major cities.

This fountain and statue at St. Luke’s Catholic Church in Barefoot Bay, provides a bit of a respite from the area that surrounds it. The large vertically ribbed wall that surrounds it, simulates sky and ocean providing a backdrop fitting for the setting.
