Parklet – Akron, Ohio

This parklet was installed in July 2018. Designed as a pilot project and with support from neighboring building owners, the parklet is intended to test the viability of similar ideas downtown. Local artist Dominic Falcione is responsible for lighting and street furniture. The project was carried out pursuant to recommendations from Gehl Studio, an international urban design firm that has done several other pop-up projects in Akron.

Flooring is sanded and shaped to provide a smooth accessible transition from the sidewalk to the parklet.

In an innovative gesture, this smaller bench and planter grouping is positioned several feed away from the parklet. It serves to signal to pedestrians that something interesting is happening nearby.

A similar planter and bench pairing on a neighboring street provides interesting continuity with the main parklet.
