A mill powered by vanes turned by the wind; typically used for grinding grain; commonly in use until mid-19th century; such as sugar cane mills in the West Indies; types include post mill, smock mill. 2. A tower structure with wind-powered vanes connected by a rotating shaft to a pump or generator; common on ranches and forms for pumping water and, 20th century, generating electricity.
