A crucifix as used in the chancel of a Christian church. Also may be accompanied by: rood screen – a screen separating the choir and presbytery from the nave, supporting the rood; rood beam – a horizontal beam across the entrance to the chancel of a church to support the rood; rood arch – the arch supporting a rood or rarely the arch between the nave and chancel; rood altaran altar standing against the nave side of a rood screen; rood loft – a gallery over a rood screen; rood stair – a small spiral staircase giving access to a rood loft; rood spire, rood tower, rood steeple – built over the crossing of the nave and transepts, roughly above the rood.
