Moorish Revival

A number of elaborate houses of worship were built in the late nineteenth century styles reflecting the cultural origins of their congregations. The Moorish Revival was used especially for synagogues to reflect the golden age of Judaism in Spain during Muslim rule. Highly detailed Flemish, Northern Baroque, Russian Orthodox, and Spanish Colonial churches also were built in this period for specific ethnic groups. (Reiss, 2004) In rare cases the Moorish Revival also expanded to apartment buildings. (Kremer, 2025) Photo from Highland Park, Michigan, 2004.
