marbleized

Simulating the appearance of the surface color and pattern of stone by painting or staining. Especially used to depict veined marble. May be applied to base materials of slate, plain marble, cast iron, and plaster. If light gray or greenish veins, might be chipolin painting in imitation of cipolino marble. If imitating wood graining, see faux bois. First used soon after 1600. Also see ragging, scagliola, and scumbling. Photo from Hay House, Macon, Georgia, 2023. (Kremer, 2023)
