A hot-rolled structural steel section having an I-shape with sloped inner flange surfaces and deep webs. Manufactured to a standardized shape and weight beginning in 1896. Designated by the prefix S followed by the size and weight of the member. Also see wide flange beam. (Kremer, 2023)
