East Kiwanis Place – Hamilton, Ontario, Canada

Isaac Kremer/ August 30, 2018/ Field Notes, Physical, placemaking, public art/ 0 comments

This park combines public art, sculpture, and placemaking elements to make a lively, if a little bit idiosyncratic place.

The mural is a focal point. These is a trompe l’oeil effect with vistas vanishing in the distance, and a staircase seemingly busting through a broken wall.

This bulletin board is for official postings. The base has oversized buttons, referring to the “Fabric District” in which the park is located.

A chess table with fixed seating provides an opportunity for those who are interested to play a game of chess (f they bring their own pieces).

Bollars along the edge of the park are in the form of oversized thread spools.

Finally, the primary sculpture is a draping study on a headless form. This is the final reference to the Fabric District and a focal point as people approach the space.
