Ward Melville Heritage Organization – Stony Brook, New York

We arrived in Stony Brook just as the sun was setting.

This made for an interesting time to see Hercules, a figurehead from the U.S.S. Ohio. This ship was the first ship built at the Brooklyn Navy Yard and launched in 1820. The figurehead was carved from a single piece of cedar. The U.S.S. Ohio was decommissioned in Greenport, destroyed, and sunk in 1884. The figurehead was saved and acquired in 1954 by philanthropist Ward Melville who deeded it to the Ward Melville Heritage Organization for preservation.

Also on display beside the water is the Polaris whaleboat.
