pattern book
Imported beginning in the 18th century, a book of drawings intended as a guide for American housewrights and carpenters to the popular English styles of the time. In the 19th century, pattern and plan books were published in the United States by American designers and were very influential in promoting specific styles and philosophies for living. “The number of architectural pattern books doubled in the 1870s and nearly doubled again in the 1880s” (Zukowski, 2006).
