A small plate or salver for the bread, used in the celebration of the Eucharist: it was so formed in ancient times as to fit the chalice, or cup, as a cover; and was most commonly made of gold or silver, often silver-gilt, and with some sacred device or inscription. The word is still retained in our prayer-book. (Parker, 1896)
