In general, the ordinary white, gray to black, greenish, bluish, brown, and red varieties of cryptocrystalline silica. The name jasper is applied to the more pronounced brown, yellow, and red varieties, one form grading into the other without distinct lines of demarcation. (Sturgis, 1900)
