A roof covering made up of layers of saturated felt, cloth, or paper; each layer is coated with a tar-like substance (e.g., asphalt, pine pitch, tar, coal tar, etc.); the roof is usually finished off with a coat of sand or gravel. Built-up roofing is usually restricted to buildings with low-pitched or flat roofs. (Phillips, 1994)
