A form of construction, usually of masonry, in which a number of units span an opening by carrying the downward thrust laterally to the next unit and finally to the abutments or vertical supports. Unusually further described by its intrados outline, as round, elliptical, pointed, trefoil, etc. Photo from New York City, New York, 2018. (Saylor, 1952)
