Albion Interactive History / People
Four World War II soldiers who lived in Albion at various times served as Tuskegee Airmen during World War II: Robert Chandler, Grover Crumbsy, Finis Holt, and Richard Weatherford. The Tuskegee Airmen consisted of nearly 1,000 black soldiers who were trained at the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama to become pilots in the U.S. Army Air Corps. The Airmen unit served valiantly in Europe and North Africa, flying over 1,500 missions. Albion’s former Airmen were recognized at a special reception held in their honor on February 22, 1998 at Starr Commonwealth. Picture is of Pilot Richard Weatherford next to his B-52 Mitchell bomber in a 1943 photograph.
