Modernistic (1920-1940)

Identifying Features
Art Moderne – Smooth wall surface, usually of stucco; flat roof, usually with small ledge (coping) at roof line; horizontal grooves or lines in walls and horizontal balustrade elements give a horizontal emphasis; facade usually asymmetrical.

Art Deco – Smooth wall surface, usually of stucco; zigzags, chevrons, and other stylized and geometric motifs occur as decorative elements on facade; towers and other vertical projections above the roof line give a vertical emphasis. (Source: McAlester, 1984)
