Dudleigh Vernor, 1892
Co-Composer “Sweetheart of Sigma Chi”
Died 1974
During the spring of 1911, Dudleigh Vernor and Byron D. Stokes, then freshman recently initiated into the Sigma Chi fraternity, wrote the lyrics and music of the Sweetheart of Sigma Chi. The song had its premiere at the 25th chapter reunion shortly thereafter, and became an instant hit. The piece was published in 1912, and soon became the most famous fraternity song ever written. A historical marker since has been placed on Dickie Hall where it was originally composed.
