Mike Tomchak, 1892

    Died 1947

Mike Tomchak operated a popular pool hall and grocery store at 612 Austin Avenue from the 1920s through the 1940s. A native of Leskova, Russia, Mike came to Albion during World War I and originally worked at the Albion Malleable Iron Company prior to becoming a “west end” merchant. His establishment eventually became known as Tomchak’s Tavern and was continued by his widow Catherine (1911-2002) through the 1960s. This aluminum token was good for 5 cents in trade and was used in conjunction with pool games throughout the 1930s.
