Peters, Gertrude Smith Hawes, 1903
Gertrude Smith was born in Eckford Township, Calhoun County, to Thomas and Edna Smith on November 25, 1903. She spent her early years in Homer, marrying Arthur C. Hawes in 1926. The couple lived in Battle Creek for the first year of their marriage, then moved to Albion where Gertrude taught in the public schools for three years. She had two sons, Robert and Lawrence. Her first husband died in 1948.
In 1950, Gertrude married Dr. C. Conway Peters, who was on the music staff at Albion College. While in Albion, Gertrude was a member of the First Methodist Church, the Entre Nous Club and the Order of the Eastern Star After her husband’s retirement, the couple moved to Florida, where Gertrude belonged to the Garden Club and a recreation association. She spent the last eight years of her life at Vista Grande Villa in Jackson.
