Louisa Peabody, 1819
Wife of Charles Stockwell


Daughter of Tenney and Madelon Peabody, Louisa was born August 28, 1819 in Niagara County New York. From there she moved with her family to Michigan in 1831.

It has been reported that in he childhood and woman hood Louisa was “a determined scholar” and learned English, mathematics, Latin, German, and Spanish. She and Mr. Stockwell were married July 18, 1844. Their only child, Madelon L. Stockwell who became Madelon Stockwell Turner, grew to be quite widely known to earlyAlbionians.

She was not only an early student on the Albion campus, but also studied at the University of Michigan. In fact, she became the first woman ever toreceive a diploma from the literary department of the University of Michigan. Upon her death Albion College received more that $300,000 from her estate and with the money built Stockwell Memorial Library.
