Cushman, Maria H. Depew, 1821

Maria H. Depew was born in the state of New York and moved with her parents to Spring Arbor, Michigan, when she was eleven years old. She attended the Seminary of Southern Michigan, and in 1844 was one of eleven ladies listed as presenters at an exhibition of that institution.
Maria married Isaac Cushman in 1844. They made their home in Albion for several years. Their son Henry was born in 1846.
While in Albion, Maria was a member of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union and president of the Women’s Foreign Missionary Society. In her obituary, Maria was noted for the “kindliness and nobleness of her character and her untiring devotion to friends and neighbors.”
