Crittenden, Sophia Stowell, 1831
    Died March 31, 1908

Sophia Stowell was born in Richfield, New York, on June 14, 1831. Her family moved to Albion in 1836 when there still were only two or three log cabins in existence. She married Henry W. Crittenden in 1852 at Newburgh Mills, located east of Albion. Their honeymoon trip was to Jackson, twenty miles away.

A biographical sketch from the Albion Mirror says of her: “She shared equally with her husband all the trials, privations, and tribulations of pioneer life.” Her husband was in the grocery and produce business most of his life, buying wheat, apples, hides and wool. He was also active in politics. He helped found the Republican Party in Jackson, and served various roles in city government.

Sophia bore nine children, of whom four daughters survived to adulthood. Her husband lived to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with her. Sophia died on March 31, 1908.
