Rev. George Bennard, 1873
Died 1958
One of the most beloved hyms of all time, “The Old Rugged Cross,” was composed here in Albion by Rev. George Bennard (1873-1958) in 1912. The hymn was written at the home of professor Delos Fall, 1101 E. Michigan Avenue where Bennard rented an apartment. The hymn was first sung publicly at revival meetings Bennard was conducting in Pokagon, Michigan, and became an instant hit. Rev. Bennard often conducted evangelistic services in Albion during his long ministry, and operated a gospel tract society at 108 W. Porter St. for many years.
