Aughton, Gertrude May, 1914
Died January 20, 1998
May Aughton was born May 30, 1914, in Hamden, Connecticut. Both of her parents were from Lancashire, England. A registered nurse, May was sworn into the Navy Nurse Corps at the Brooklyn Navy Yard almost immediately after the declaration of World War II. She served during World War II at Pearl Harbor, and during the Korean War, retiring in 1957 with the rank of Lieutenant Commander. After her retirement from the Navy, she worked at Sheldon Memorial Hospital in Albion, at Foote Hospital in Jackson, and in other medical positions. May was a skilled seamstress and avid bridge player, and a faithful member of St. James’ Episcopal Church. She died on January 20, 1998.
