public space

Places where people can gather together. Traditionally the town square or commons were commonly used. Today might include streets, squares, parks, downtowns and districts, public buildings, waterfronts, beaches, and public markets. Concept popularized by author William “Holly” Whyte (1917-1999) and later by the New York City-based organization Project for Public Spaces and adherents across the globe. Placemaking is a related movement to engage people in creating great public spaces. Leading public space examples include Bryant Park, Union Square, and the High Line in New York City, Campus Martius Park in Detroit, Millennium Park in Chicago, and numerous others like it.
